Join us for hands-on summer fun at the Center for Pioneer Life! Each week explores a different piece of Appalachian heritage—from quilting and farm life to storytelling traditions. Come for one session or two—every day is different!

About the event
Week 1: Appalachian Quilting
July 7 and July 9
This week of summer camp invites children to discover how stories, history, and survival were shared long before phones and technology. Campers will explore the Appalachian tradition of quilt storytelling, learning how quilts preserved family memories, community history, and important messages through patterns and symbols. Each child will design a personal quilt square inspired by the week’s activities, contributing to a collaborative camp quilt tied together in the style of generations past.
Campers will also journey through the history of maps and navigation, exploring how pioneers relied on landmarks, rivers, stars, and handmade maps to travel through the mountains. Through hands-on activities, they will create their own nature-based maps, follow directions through outdoor challenges, and test their navigation skills with fellow campers.
