Support "A Day as a Pioneer"
Help bring history to life for students across Western North Carolina.
At the Center for Pioneer Life, we believe that learning should be hands-on, meaningful, and rooted in community. Our flagship field trip program, “A Day as a Pioneer,” invites 2nd-5th grade students to step into the world of Southern Appalachian settlers through a full-day immersive experience on our 12-acre historic farm.
Students rotate through engaging stations where they:
-
Observe a working blacksmith forge
-
Build shelters using natural materials
-
Grind corn and tend to livestock
-
Churn butter and learn old-time Appalachian games
Through this program, students gain a deeper understanding of early American history, the environment, and the resilience of the region’s pioneers. It’s aligned with state education standards and built to spark curiosity, empathy, and pride in place.
