HELP BRING HISTORY TO LIFE FOR STUDENTS ACROSS WESTERN NORTH CAROLINA
At the Center for Pioneer Life, we believe that learning should be hands-on, meaningful, and rooted in community. Our flagship field trip program, “A Day as a Pioneer,” invites 2nd-8th grade students to step into the world of Southern Appalachian settlers through a full-day immersive experience on our 12-acre historic farm.
The program consists of four rotating stations that teach various aspects of pioneer living: shelter building, blacksmithing, farming and foodways, and household chores/Appalachian pastimes. Local experts lead student groups for 45 minutes to 1 hour at each station. Teachers are provided with educational materials to use before, during, and after the visit, allowing students to extend and deepen their knowledge of Appalachian pioneer history and culture.
Through this program, students gain a deeper understanding of early American history, the environment, and the resilience of the region’s pioneers. It’s aligned with state education standards and built to spark curiosity, empathy, and pride in place.
A donation of $2,500 provides sponsorship for 60 students to experience “A Day as a Pioneer” with standards-aligned education. Your donation will directly support the following resources:
