About the event

Saltville, Virginia, has a rich history of salt production dating back to prehistoric times. Located in the Appalachian Mountains, the area was naturally endowed with abundant salt deposits. 

During the Civil War, Saltville became a strategic location due to its salt production, which was crucial for preserving food for the Confederate army. The town's saltworks were extensive, with large boiling vats and evaporation ponds used to extract salt from the brine. After the war, the salt industry continued to play a vital role in Saltville's economy. The process involved drilling wells to reach the brine, which was then brought to the surface and evaporated in large pans to produce salt. This method remained in use until the early 20th century when the industry declined due to competition and the advent of refrigeration.
