Hands-on, Educational and Inspiring Workshops
in Partnership with Penland School of Craft

Basket making is as old as the history of people. In the early days, baskets were necessary for carrying and storing

everything imaginable — food, clothing, tools, and they were depended upon for harvesting, storage, and transportation.

The Center for Pioneer Life, in partnership with Penland School of Craft, will host two workshops to give you a chance to

delve into the basic foundational skills of basket making.

Both of these classes will be taught by Bridget VanRemortel. They will be held indoors; masks are required.

Beginners are welcome.

Hot Date: Blacksmithing for Two

You select the date and call us for availability

$210 per couple

Instructor: Paul Lundquist

Step into the blacksmith shop to experience the feeling of hammering on hot iron! Bring a friend to learn the craft of forging, a common yet critical skill required for life in 1850.

First, you’ll learn to build and maintain a coal fire. Then you will make two or three small items like a bottle opener, bracelets, a tool, or nails and hooks. We’ll even throw in a little history so, as you work, you will learn how our forebears develop skills to create essential items needed on the homestead. The instructor will guide and coach while you work on your piece with your own hands.
